The Board Can Strengthen Its Guidance and Planning Efforts for Future Evaluations of the Law Enforcement Unit

The Board's Law Enforcement Unit, which protects agency personnel and property, is subject to regulations governing its use of federal law enforcement powers. We examined the Board's most recent internal evaluation of the unit's compliance with those regulations and internal policies and procedures.

We found that the oversight committee responsible for the evaluation

• does not have guidance to ensure evaluators thoroughly document their work
• lacks detailed written guidance to ensure that evaluations are conducted consistently and effectively
• has not finalized a plan to identify and secure resources with the background and expertise needed to conduct future evaluations

Our report contains recommendations to improve documentation, ensure consistency, and identify resources for future evaluations.
