Career Paths

Auditors conduct audits and evaluations of the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of the programs and operations of the Board and the CFPB; the agencies’ compliance with applicable laws and regulations; and the effectiveness of their internal controls. Auditors also oversee an independent public accounting firm’s audit of the Board’s and the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council’s financial statements.

IT auditors and IT specialists conduct audits and evaluations of the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of the information technology programs of the Board and the CFPB and perform security reviews of the agencies’ systems and applications to ensure the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of their data. These audits and evaluations focus on information security controls, systems development, operations, investment, and contractor support. Our Data Analytics Group conducts risk assessments and analytical analysis to help audit and investigation teams identify trends and form conclusions.

Criminal investigators conduct complex fraud investigations as well as investigations into violations of ethics and of Board and CFPB policies. They have the authority to carry firearms and to seek and execute search and arrest warrants. Computer forensics experts and other analysts, including hotline coordinators, support investigations.

Other professionals include lawyers, who advise the inspector general and review laws and regulations, and communications, information technology, administrative, and human resources professionals, who support the OIG in achieving its mission.

Students should check out our paid internship program, which provides valuable work experience to undergraduate and graduate students working toward degrees related to our career paths.
